At last Friday's @cm_seattle, someone asked the sp At last Friday's @cm_seattle, someone asked the speaker @ashleyworobec how you know when you're being performative. She answered that if you're wondering, you probably are and then gave a great example.
She is so right and I couldn't help but think of my own answer too and it's this. If your actions do not require your discomfort or the discomfort of others, then you know you're only being performative. The performative stuff matters and it's important but we've got to back them up with actions for real change.

As BIPOC, we are raised to believe that the comfort of white folks supersedes our own. This means tending to white fragility and making sure our words and actions do not offend. But sometimes, we need to offend and it requires our own discomfort to do that.

For white folks, this means they need to especially lean into discomfort in themselves and others so BIPOC can stop managing white people's feelings. This is the only way to be a true ally.

Poppies blooming everywhere in the neighborhood on Poppies blooming everywhere in the neighborhood on our evening walks with the dog. It looks like a field, doesn't it? But it's a parking strip and a little oasis amidst the grittiness of the city (the grittiness that I love).

So funny how I grew up in NYC, moved to CA where I lived in the perfect house in a perfect neighborhood where everyone had swimming pools and I couldn't stand it. I like a bit of grittiness and imperfection and the oddly painted houses in Seattle. It's such a reflection of life and people. I used to be a perfectionist during my moves but deep inside I must've known I wanted something different.

It was so cool to get a personal perspective on Grace but we also talked a lot about how Grace came to be who she was and it was obvious to me that Tiffany has her spirit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Head on over to the link in bio @cultures.connecting to read the interview or look at my stories for a direct link. Btw, I am completely overhauling their website! Fun times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

@tatyanakurepina finally got a chance to interview @tatyanakurepina finally got a chance to interview me for her documentary about #mynamestory project this weekend. We talked for two hours about how I got to where I am and about the project and my connection to each person's name story.

Of course, a day later, my brain reminds me about the things I wanted to say but didn't in the moment. Don't we all? But I'm okay with that. What I do want to emphasize though, as I move through the artists community in Seattle as part of the #artisforeveryone movement, is this...

Our stories matter.

Our stories ARE American stories.

Our stories don't need to center on whiteness to belong.

For so long, BIPOC have been told that in order for our stories to matter, we have to appeal to everyone and we all know that "everyone" is code for white (or able-bodied or hetero or neuro normative, etc). This is something that we learned in order to navigate the world and to protect white fragility. Doesn't this sound familiar - especially for women who have always been taught to be people pleasers and to accommodate everyone else's feelings but our own?

But this isn't true. We have our own perspectives shaped by our own circumstances and experiences and this is exactly why our stories are important.

So this is a reminder to myself and to everyone else out there willing to be vulnerable enough to share the gift of our true voices that we matter exactly as we are.
