When I began my journey 3 years ago, I sent out the first issue of my newsletter called, “I Want to Matter” where I stopped hiding and sharing all of my shame. At the end of that issue, I shared this poem by Langston Hughes.
“She,
In the dark,
Found light
brighter than many ever see.
She,
Within herself,
Found loveliness,
Through the soul’s own mastery.
And now the world receives
From her dower:
The message of the strength
Of inner power.”
I didn’t know why or what I was doing at the time. It was a great, terrifying leap into the dark unknown where I started delving into the darkest parts of me, tucked and hidden in places I’d been too afraid to see and feel. I felt broken and unworthy and I didn’t know the darkness was where I would find my light. Yet, my gut knew and it somehow found and held onto this poem.
I look back at this poem three years later and see how much truth there is in it. It represents my truth and even in the darkest, most painful period of my life, I was being guided by it.
We all have an inner power. We all have the capacity to connect to our truth whether we see it or not. It’s there. You just have to go into the dark to find it.
