“Loving ourselves through the process of owning our story is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.” – Brene Brown.
In partnership with Lean In Seattle who sponsored the event, we had a powerful day of storytelling on the topic of self-love at the University of Washington campus. Dozens of women volunteered to speak their truths and tell stories of self-love. Themes such as struggling with feelings of belonging, learning to stop living by others’ expectations and living for yourself, dealing with severe health issues and more were explored through storytelling. The women were incredibly vulnerable, brave, and honest and by doing so were practicing incredible acts of self-love because they trusted their stories mattered.
There were so many inspiring stories and in every single one, I saw myself and I’m sure everyone in the audience felt the same way too. When we hold space for each other to show up as our vulnerable, authentic selves we see the things that connect us more than what divides us and there is magic in that experience.
I still have a dozen cards belonging to women who didn’t get their names drawn randomly to speak. If you were one of them, I hope you attend the next one in April.
